Hi ewingpup - I'm looking at doing the same with an UltraPup, so I look forward to hearing about your progress. Are you gas welding or using MIG/TIG?

I just bought a new Lincoln precision tig 225 to do my finish welds. A few years ago I bought a Miller econotig, It was fine for thicker tubing on other projects. The Miller only went down to 20 amps, The 225 goes down to 5. Big difference.
Hard to control a weld puddle when it is at starts out near the amps needed for the weld. My new one will start and not overheat the area until I need it.

Plans Building an Ultra pup |
|
I have made a slow start. so far after a year I have the wing ribs completed and hanging on my shop wall. I chose to buy the wing tanks from precepter. I ordered the Wing tips but now have made my own and they have agreed to credit me the cost of the tips for the cowling. I have a 225 Tig and have been practicing on another project. A 1941 Aernca Chief rebuld. One of the reasons this project is slow. Hope to get the chief completed and get back on the pup. I'm very glad to see this forum. I can use the help and discussion.

Tig question |
|
Hi to the group. The Tig welders can help me with this. I am curious as to the necessity of a pulser for thin materials. The Lincoln 225 has this option but I am not impressed with the pulse range. I understand you want 60 Hz for moderate heat reduction, and as much as 500 Hz for thin stainless. I have not welded much with Tig and I am trying to make the decision to spring for a Tig unit (big bucks) or stick with gas.
What is happening to the Yahoo Group? Last time I was there the moderator had left. Seems like the group was unwinding, although there is a lot of good history to search through.

Tig vs Gas |
|
Opinions vary significantly on this subject. I however went the TIG route and love the 225. I have been welding 4130, mild steel and aluminum so far. I really like the pulse . It has helped me time the process and get better welds. I also recommend the EAA Tig welding class. It was great.

After years of starting and stopping on several different projects, I give up. Bought a flying 172.
